Recognizing the vaste scope for development of Horticulture in Andhra Pradesh, A New Department of Horticulture was created on June 30, 1981 in the state headed by Director of Horticulture. The department is dedicated to advancing the integrated development of horticulture crops viz. fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, spices , flowers and ornamental plants with much focus on quality production & productivity enhancement.
■ To ensure increase in area of horticulture crops ■ To enhance productivity & production of horticulture crops by transfering technology ■ To ensure adequate supply of quality plant materials ■ Formulation of policies and programmes and their Implementation aimed to achieve rapid growth of horticulture sector in state ■ To ensure timely implementation of schemes through monitoring & evaluation ■ To transfer technologies from lab to land

2. Plantation and Development : Large-scale plantation programs for various horticultural crops.
3. Organic Farming : Promoting organic farming practices among horticulturists
4. Protected Cultivation : Encouraging protected cultivation practices like greenhouse and polyhouse farming.
5. Post-Harvest Management : Improving post-harvest infrastructure and practices to reduce wastage and improve the shelf life of produce.
6. State-Specific Schemes : Various state-specific schemes tailored to the unique needs of Andhra Pradesh's horticulture sector.
